Mosaic is an all-in-one platform I designed and built for indie filmmakers and screenwriters — screenwriting, production tools, project showcasing, crew discovery, and festival planning in one professional workspace, at a price indie filmmakers can actually afford.
Making an independent film means juggling a fragmented stack: budgets and cast/crew lists in spreadsheets, project management in one app, call sheets and legal documents scattered across docs and file storage — and then separate, expensive platforms on top of that just to write a screenplay, list your work, or be discoverable. IMDbPro is widely disliked for its cost and user experience, screenwriting tools are priced for professionals, and there was no easy, credible way for a filmmaker to showcase current and upcoming work and be found by collaborators. The deeper gap is knowledge. Many first-time and indie filmmakers — as I was — don't yet know what professional production actually involves: what goes into pre-production and post-production, which roles do what, what legal documentation is needed, or how to format a screenplay correctly. Existing tools assume you already know. Mosaic was built to bridge professional filmmaking and indie filmmaking: a guided, professional workspace that shows you what a production needs while giving you the tools to do it.
Product Definition
- Wrote a full product requirements document (working in Claude) mapping the key gaps in the market, the core feature set, and the simplest possible user experience
- Priced the product for its audience first: indie filmmakers cannot carry five separate subscriptions, so Mosaic consolidates the stack into one affordable platform
Build
- Built the platform in Lovable on a Supabase database from the PRD
- Designed a collaborative screenplay editor as a dedicated feature build — with its own feature PRD, hands-on testing by me, and direct comparison against Celtx, the tool I was already using, to make sure Mosaic solved more of the workflow and UX problems
- Added guided walkthroughs for production steps and screenplay formatting, so first-time filmmakers learn the professional standard while they work
Feature Scope Built
- Screenwriting tool with collaborators, notes, and version tracking — used live in Moon Era's annual writers workshop (now in its third year)
- Production toolkit covering the documents, roles, and responsibilities across pre-production and post-production
- Project pages for showcasing existing and upcoming films, with links — filling the discovery gap left by IMDbPro and festival-only platforms
- People discovery: find cast and crew in your area and reach out directly through Mosaic
- Festival calendar and a Festival Strategist that takes a film's title, summary, genres, and budget and maps a recommended festival strategy — so first-time filmmakers don't waste money on festivals that aren't worth it
Launch
- Soft-launched in October 2026 to my Moon Era writers workshop cohort first, onboarding them directly and gathering real collaboration and note-taking use before any public push
- Growth so far is entirely word-of-mouth; planned growth is community-first — filmmaking events in Oklahoma City and Tulsa, then film festivals and film markets in larger filmmaking cities, with booths, networking, and direct feedback
- Soft-launched October 2026 with ~20 early users, all acquired by word-of-mouth with no targeted marketing yet - First paying users converted during the soft launch, validating the consolidated, affordable-pricing model - Adopted as the collaboration tool for Moon Era's writers workshop — writers used it for collaborative screenplay work, notes, and version tracking - Moon Era Films adopting the production toolkit for its own productions and commercial work going forward - Hard launch and targeted audience growth planned for 2027, with a goal of 100–1,000 actively-using filmmakers rather than vanity signups
